A motocicleta tem proporções compactas, design dinâmico e motor monocilíndrico de 313 cm³, refrigerado a água, com duplo comando de válvulas e injeção eletrônica de combustível. Esse fórmula faz com que a moto entregue 34 cv de potência a 9.500 rpm e um torque máximo de 28 Nm a 7.500 rpm.
Segundo a marca, o desenho da BMW G 310 R é inspirado em outros membros da família BMW Motorrad, entre eles a BMW S 1000 R, com carenagem frontal que incorpora o farol, nos contornos do tanque de combustível em formas arrojadas e nas proporções típicas de uma roadster, com dianteira robusta e traseira elevada.
